This trek has been a domain of the mountain expedition. Mt. Manaslu,
8156m
was first climbed in 1956 by Japanese expedition. This trek begins
from Gorkha
Bazaar and once on the first day we would have lunch near by Gorkha
Durbar
Square. It was from here that King Prithvi Narayan Shah started
his conquest of the
various tiny Kingdoms and unified them into a single nation, Nepal.
The palace
also exposes the ancient architecture. The Gurungs of the Budhi
Gandaki area
are primarily farmers though there are a few remnants of a hunting
society.
The trail crosses the bridge over the Budhi Gandaki and climbs up
onto a ridge with
huge rapids before continuing up to Khursane and a big Gurung house
at 820m. On
the trail, you can also visit the Ningma-pa sector and nun's monastery,
on the
way you could also see the famous Tibetan Mani sculptures on the
stones and
see the panoramic views of the hills and mountains. You can also
meet the real
Tibetan people but they are Nepali citizens as well. The Tibet boarder
is very
close from Samdo and if you walk more this pass (if you have an
extra time), you will
also catch the glimpse of Tibet. You could be able to see the prayer
flags on
the Larkya-La pass, descend to four frozen rules, then makes the
final steep
climbs to the pass Larkya-La at 5100m. The trail becomes rougher
and indistinct
as it crosses the moraine to the south of steep, grassy slopes.
It takes three
to four hours from the rest house to the Larkya-La. It is best to
make an early
start to cross the pass safely. The peaks of the west pass are Him
Lung Himal
(7126m), Cheo Himal (6820m), Gyaji Kung, Kang Guru (6981m) and Annapurna
2 (7937m).
