While this trek is short, there will be numerous
opportunities to experience and see a plethora of wildlife and flora.
Rara is a beautiful lake, it is also the largest lake in Nepal;
measuring about 13 km around the lake. A day devoted to making this
circuit is a day well spent. This is an isolated region where birds,
flowers, and wild life thrive. Among the animals that we may encounter
on this trip are the Himalayan bear, Himalayan thar, serow,
goral, musk deer, red panda, otters, and both the resus and langur
monkeys. Rara lake is about 170m deep, and is filled with fish,
providing an important resting place for migrating water fowl. There
are two routes to Danphe Langa. When there is snow, we take the
longer, lower route. The high trail route crosses a pass that is
closed when there is heavy snow. We will travel north from Jumla
up the Jugad river valley. The low trail from Jumla to Rara Lake
follows the north bank of the Tila River, then turns up the Chaudhabis
River passing through meadows and pine forest.
