About India
Garhwal Himalayan
This region contains some of the finest mountains in the Himalayas
and is highly accessible. This region had been open since the British
took over in 1815, but it was abandoned in favor of the more mysterious
Nepal. The splendors of these mountains are the scenic forests around
big peaks and the local population is unaffected by the ravages
of mass tourism. This area is a national park. In the whole trek
you will see different species of birds. Eight routes are included
here, which offer some of the most spectacular walking and scenery.
The best season is February-March at lower altitudes for the spectacular
rhododendrons. April-May is good at higher altitudes with cool weather.
In July-August the monsoon is good for alpine flowers and in September
the air is beautifully rain-washed, but early morning clear skies
can give way by 10 o'clock to cloud, and the view may completely
disappear. October-November when the temperature is lower the skies
are clearer and the vegetation greener. The mountains which are
dominating the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas are the Nanda Devi group
of mountains with Nanda Devi (7,816), named after the all-ecompassing
form of the female deity, at its center and this is the highest
mountain in India. Nanda Devi means (who gives bliss), a local princess
who was demanded for marriage by marauding prince. War ensued, her
father was killed and she fled, Eventually she took refuge at the
top of the mountain now bearing her name.
