Darjeeling
Darjeeling meaning place of the Dorjee Thunderbolt and the surrounding
area, once belonged to the Rajas of Sikkim. although parts were
annexed from time to time by the Bhutanese and Nepalese. Darjeeling
is a famous part of hill station in India. The British obtained
permission to gain the site of the Darjeeling in 1835. It was practically
uninhabited and thickly forested a worthless, uninhabited mountain.
But it soon grew into a popular health resort after a road and several
houses were built and tea growing was introduced. Built on a crescent
shaped ridge, it faces the Himalayas. The surrounding hills are
thickly covered with coniferous forests or terraced tea gardens.
The best trekking season is in
the April-May when the magnolias and rhododendrons are in full bloom.
October-November, there may be the occasional showers. In the autumn
the air is dry and visibility is excellent. The Religion in India
is blend of Hinduism and Buddhism
Kalimpong
Kalimpong is situated in Darjeeling and is a 51km journey (2 ½hrs)
is through beautiful scenery. Set in beautiful wooded mountain scenery,
Kalimpong, point of the once three closed lands on the trade routes
to Tibet, Bhutan and Nepal. The original name meant the stronghold
of the King's minister. The gentle climate has warm summers (around
30 degree Celsius) and cool winters (down to 7 degree Celsius).
The best seasons are September-February and March-June. The lifestyle
of the local people reflects the social influences of its Himalayan
neighbors. Nurseries excels in produce orchids, amaryllis, roses,
cacti, dahlias and gladioli. Thongsa Gompa, the oldest Bhutanese
monastery, is in poor condition. The highest point in Kalimpong
with super views includes the Brang Monastery at Zang-dog Palri.
Unique outside Tibet, it retains its special lamaistic order with
a school of Tibetan medicine.
