About India
Ladakh
Ladakh situated between the two highest mountain ranges in the
world, the Himalayan to the south and the Karakoram to the north.
Ladakh covers a large area of almost 100,000 km. It is the largest
district in the Indian state of Jammu Kashmir. These high, barren
plateaus are situated between 2500 and 5000 meters. The Indus River,
comes 500 kilometers from its sources in the Tibet. This region,
in the rain shadow has a spectacular moonscape devoid of vegetation
except where there is an occasional stream. Ladakh's Buddhist rich
culture and religion heritage can be seen in the centuries old monasteries,
some of them built on sheer cliffs and still functioning actively.
In the past, Ladakh and Spit established close relation with Lhasa.
Leh, the capital is in the Board valley. To the north and the north
east are the Shyok and the Nubra valleys, to the south east the
highest plateau of Rupshu, to the south and the south west the Zanskar
area, and to the west, is the high road which links the Ladakh and
the Kashmir valley. Ladakh offers wonderful treks over rugged landscape
and high passes, and easy treks going through villages. The Indus
and Zanskar river provide excellent
whitewater rafting opportunities for the adventurous and is a region
of intense beauty for the romantically inclined.
Lahual Valley
The LAhual Valley, situated in the himachal Pradesh State is separate
from Ladakh. It is also known as the Chandra-Bhaga Valley. It occupies
the trough between the central and inner Himalayan mountains. It
is separated from Zanskar by the Great Himalayan Divide, a snowy
mountains range, and the Kullu Valley in the Central Himalayan Range.
Lahual has its own high mountains with peaks over 6000 meters and
vast glaciers. There are a few passes that connect Lahual with Kullu
Valley, including Rohtang Pass (the most popular), Hamta Pass and
Umga Pass. Passes that connect Lahual with Zanskar and Ladakh are,
Baralacha Pass and Shingu Pass.
In The Lahual Valley there is a rich Buddhist heritage and culture
as can be seen in the monasteries and the life style of the people.
